On Monday 16th May 2016, Milkround School Leaves partnered with Central Careers Hub to put on their first Careers Adviser Conference.
Including sessions from industry experts, such as Careers London, London Ambitions, The University of Cambridge, SMRS and IBM, over 200 careers advisers spent their Monday at Milkround School Leavers’ HQ in London Bridge to learn about policies in education, changes in the curriculum and options for their students once finishing school or college.
A jam packed day began with music from the Soul Jazz choir from LaSWAP Sixth Form in Camden, North London. The morning sessions focused on policies and curriculum change, looking at how UCAS points will affect how students are applying to university and how universities are making student offers. Yolande Burgess from London Ambitions looked at how careers advisers can prepare their students for an ever changing future.
IBM and Just IT took centre stage in the afternoon, discussing their school leaver opportunities and the benefits of undertaking an apprenticeship. This proved to be a popular session with careers advisers, with many asking questions surrounding how they can encourage their students and their parents to take these opportunities.
There was also a session from recruitment and employer communications agency SMRS talking about their joint research with Milkround ‘Opportunities for Women in STEM’, with a strong focus on school leaver perceptions of the sector. The research gave a lot of insight into how schools can do different things to encourage young women into the STEM sectors, such as inviting more employers in to conduct workshops about working in the sector.
Andy Gardner, Director and Founder of Central Careers Hub, said “Lots of Careers Advisers were coming up at the end of the event to say what a brilliant day it was. Great content, fantastic venue and two partners – Central Careers Hub and Milkround School Leavers- that really complement each other. We can’t wait for next year!”
